During the crazy back-to-school days of September, families are gearing up for what feels like a new year. Both parents and children alike are adjusting to new schedules, and getting sleep routines and nutrition back in check. September also marks the onset of cold and flu season and the nervous jitters that come with managing academics, extracurricular activities, and social engagements. But it’s also a great time of year to reboot your family’s health, check in with your health care practitioner, and fill your toolbox with natural remedies to fight off common childhood ailments. In this blog post we will explore the most common natural remedies that I recommend in my naturopathic practice to alleviate symptoms and promote a speedy recovery for the common cold and flu. Let’s dive in!

Prevention is key: The best approach to dealing with the cold and flu is to prevent them in the first place. Regular handwashing, proper nutrition, keeping up with immunizations, and sufficient sleep are essential for maintaining a healthy immune system. Along with these preventative measures, there are a few supplements that can help bolster the immune system during the fall and winter months. Remember specific dosages will depend on your child’s age and weight.

Probiotics and Vitamin D: Starting in September and continuing throughout the season, I often recommend a daily probiotic and vitamin D supplement. Probiotics and vitamin D have been shown to regulate immune function, decreasing the frequency of upper respiratory tract infections (1) (2).

Echinacea, Zinc, and Vitamin C: If your child does catch a cold, it is crucial to act swiftly. At the onset of symptoms, consider giving them echinacea, zinc, and vitamin C. Echinacea can help lessen symptom severity (3), while vitamin C (4) and zinc (5) may help shorten the duration of the illness.

Black Elderberry: Black elderberry is renowned for its flu-fighting properties. This natural remedy not only helps reduce the duration and severity of cold symptoms (6) but is also known to support the immune system during flu season (7).

When to seek medical attention: While most colds and flu can be managed at home, there are instances when it's important to seek medical advice. Contact your doctor if your child experiences:

  • Difficulty breathing

  • Difficulty keeping food or fluids down

  • Difficulties swallowing

  • Fever higher than 100 F (38 C) lasting more than three days

  • Cough or nasal congestion that doesn’t improve or worsens over the course of 14 days

Conclusion: With the cold and flu season upon us, it's essential to be equipped with natural remedies that can help alleviate symptoms and support your child's recovery. By focusing on prevention through healthy habits and supplementing with immune-boosting nutrients, you can empower your child's immune system to fight off viruses. Remember, if symptoms persist or worsen, it's always advisable to consult a healthcare professional. Stay proactive and keep your little ones healthy during this cold and flu season!
