Reviving Intimate Wellness: A Deep Dive into Genitourinary Syndrome of Menopause and it's Solutions
Genitourinary syndrome of menopause (GSM) is a common condition that affects between 27-84% of postmenopausal women, yet it is often not talked about enough. This syndrome is characterized by a range of symptoms, including vaginal dryness, itching, burning, irritation, pain with sexual activity, burning on urination, increased frequency of urination, and increased risk of urinary tract infections.
The decline in estrogen that comes with menopause is the main cause of GSM. Estrogen plays a crucial role in maintaining the health and function of the tissues in the vaginal and urinary systems. Under normal conditions, estrogen stimulates the growth of the vaginal lining, maintains healthy vaginal pH, and increases lubrication. However, when estrogen levels drop, the vaginal walls can thin and become less elastic and dry, leading to the symptoms of GSM. Additionally, the decrease in muscle tone due to the loss of estrogen can weaken the pelvic floor muscles, leading to urinary incontinence and prolapse.
Fortunately, there are a number of effective treatments for GSM. In my naturopathic practice, my top 3 solutions for urinary and vaginal symptoms of menopause include vaginal estrogen, hyaluronic acid, and pelvic floor physiotherapy.
Vaginal Estrogen
One of the most effective treatments for GSM is vaginal estrogen. This can come in the form of creams, tablets, or rings. Vaginal estrogen helps to restore vaginal health by improving the thickness and elasticity of vaginal tissues and increasing lubrication.
Hyaluronic Acid
Another natural therapy that I like to use for my patients with GSM is hyaluronic acid. Hyaluronic acid is a naturally occurring substance in the body that helps to keep tissues supple and well hydrated. When applied topically to the vagina, it can help to improve the quality and quantity of vaginal moisture.
Pelvic Floor Physiotherapy
Finally, I often refer my patients to pelvic floor physiotherapy. Pelvic floor physiotherapy involves exercises that help to strengthen the pelvic floor muscles which can become weakened due to GSM. This can help to improve urinary incontinence, prolapse and recurrent UTIs.
Conclusion
In conclusion, genitourinary syndrome of menopause is a common condition that affects many women but is often not talked about enough.
